ARMENIA – SUITE OF POPULAR ARMENIAN TUNES
for piano

Armenia is a transcription for piano of the Suite of Popular Armenian Tunes, played by Huri Arakelian (shevi) and Mardin Vartazarian (piano) on the gramophone record Arménie – Musique Instrumental (OCR 67). After writing the music down by ear I have freely arranged it. In the slow middle section are to be heard imitations of Armenian folk instruments such as the qanun (a zither-like instrument similar to the Hungarian cymbalon) and the duduk (a bass recorder with a dark, mellow timbre). In the accompaniment patterns of the final section one hears the same descending lines as in the first section. Such lines also appear in Khachaturian’s Sonatina and  popular Toccata.

Style: colourful, modal harmonies.
Level of difficulty: Grade VIII (on a scale of XII grades).
