Max Prick van Wely / Albert Brussee
IMPROVISATIE OVER PERUAANSE VOLKSMELODIEËN
for piano
In the early sixties of the 20th century, Max Prick van Wely composed three improvisations on Peruvian folk tunes for the left hand for the famous pianist Cor de Groot, who had problems with his right hand at the time. De Groot never performed them, so eventually the music was given to me, when I was a pupil at the gymnasium in Apeldoorn with Prick van Wely as a teacher of School Music. Many years later, when we had entered into a partnership, I rewrote the last two folk music arrangements for piano two-handed and forged them together (A-B-A form).
In 1986, the composition was published by Broekmans & Van Poppel under both our names. No longer available, in 2021 I carefully retouched the score, simplified it somewhat and republished the work with the publisher’s permission.
Style: romantic impressionism; colourful harmonies (early Villa Lobos).
Difficulty: Grade VII (on a scale to maximally grade XII).
REVIEWS
“Albert Brussee has recently released a revised reprint of his Improvisation on Peruvian Folk Melodies, previously published in 1986 by Broekmans and Van Poppel. That edition has long been unavailable. In 2021, Albert Brussee revised the short work (four pages) and republished it in his own fund. It is an attractive, somewhat exotic-sounding and pianistically pleasantly written little work in neo-Romantic style, which calls for rather large hands. According to the composer, it has a difficulty level of VII on a scale of XII”.
