€39.95This volume comprises all the piano works from the first phase of the genesis of the cycle Harmonies poétiques et religieuses. First of all the piano piece of that name from 1833. Then the first version of Hymne de l’enfant à son réveil, inspired by the homonymous poem by Lamartine. However, the majority of the pieces, published here for the first time, came into being in the autumn of 1845, shortly after the definitive break with Marie d’Agoult.

€19.50In 2017 I was pleasantly surprised by a request from the famous Greek pianist Theodore Tzovanakis, who asked me if he might be allowed to perform the work on a tour through Switzerland (world première in Geneva) and the Netherlands (Rotterdam, The Hague, Amsterdam). I took the opportunity to thoroughly work through the score once more, resulting in this third version, which, of course, was gratefully dedicated to Theodore Tzovanakis.

€16.50The Three Songs for Piano originated in the winter of 1982-83 as songs for baritone and piano. Some years later I rewrote them for solo piano and I revised the composition in 1993, whereupon the cycle was recorded and released (AB I-01). Only in the spring of 2006 did I proceed to prepare the composition for print. The work is written in the Romantic style, with some detectable influence from the ‘light muse’.

€12.50Hymne de l’enfant à son réveil occupies a special place in the group of piano pieces assembled under the title Harmonies poétiques et réligieuses. For there exist no less than six versions of this composition: three for piano and three for choir. The three choral versions date from 1862, 1865 and 1874. Of these only the last was available in print. The present edition represents the first publication of 1862 (‘Rome, 18 Février’).

€22.50The current edition is the first printed edition of an unknown sonata by C. P. E. Bach. There are two versions of this early work, from 1736 and 1744, respectively. These are first given in Urtext and then as an annotated score (with added articulation, dynamics, fingering, etc.). With an extensive preface, a text-critical commentary and observations concerning interpretation. Both versions are recorded on cd AB I-07.

€8.50Because of the frequent use of seventh, ninth and eleventh chords, a certain affinity with jazz can be detected in Mélodie. The association with the world of the Romantic salon pieces is clearly audible in Valse finale. However, this composition is complex. Because of the difficult left-hand part with its many leaps and the widely broken chord formations that twirl as garlands through the music, this melodic study is a quite difficult entity.

€6.50This little piece is intentionally a pastiche. The overall atmosphere is ‘Chopinesque’, but in terms of style you find yourself in the early decennia of the 20th century. What I wished to capture was on the one hand the melancholy emanating from various waltzes of the Polish master, on the other hand the charm and pianistic finesse of this excellent music, seen through the rose-tinted glasses of French salon music at the fin de siècle.

€16.50The three works published here for the first time all stem from Liszt’s sketchbook N6, kept in the Goethe- and Schiller-Archiv in Weimar. The works concerned are: a Largo in B minor, Essai sur l’indifférence in E-flat major and Mazeppa, a composition in F minor that has nothing to do with the famous study of that name. The three sketches show that between 1829 and 1833 the young composer was developing his style in many ways.

€16.50In Variations on ‘My Funny Valentine’ an attempt has been made to link the world of the musical with that of Romantic piano music. After the theme in C minor, the melancholy and ardour that pervade it are amplified in the following two variations. The variations in major in the middle of the work offer some emotional respite, after which the true character of the song returns and shrouds the melody in the dark vestment of impossible love.
